Why Obama rocks my world

  • Feb. 22nd, 2008 at 1:21 AM

Barack Obama, the Illinois senator has been in a tough fight with Hillary Clinton in the US Democratic election but he already has achieved more with his soaring rhetoric and promise of change in Washington. Of all presidential candidates, Obama is the one whom chief executives of companies can draw the clearest lessons of leadership and perhaps may be useful for the politicians back home especially in the light of coming GE in Malaysia.

So why do I express such a fondness towards Obama?

1. Selflessness.
Mr. Obama is ambitious but he also possesses empathy. He listen tentatively to others even those who disagree and places a high value on not telling them of what to do but persuade them to join a common cause. This was evident in his victory speech in Iowa

" I know you didn't do this for me" It was a rhetorical trick but typical of his practise drawing listeners' experience as his own.

Unlike Hillary Clinton who insists that she is the best person in the world to lead them as she broadcast an unattractive mixture of ambition and egomania.

2. Thoughtfulness.
The Clintons may have laid him as lacking experience (much to my disgrace) but he compensates but having a sense of good judgement. He says what he really thinks rather than something convenient. Maybe Hillary has forgotten Abraham Lincoln who had little experience when he became president- isn't he considered as one of the US greatest presidents? The issue here isn't experience its about common sense and integrity.

3. He's charismatic and articulate.
When was the last time United States was guided by such a leader?
Someone with courage instead of mere ambition? Someone who truly thinks of his country's citizens as "we," not "they"? Someone who understands what it will take to help America realize the virtues it fancies about itself, what it desperately needs to become in the world?

Unleashing the glory of that future will require a difficult labor, and some may be so frightened of its birth they will refuse to abandon their nostalgia for the womb.

So now, what about the candidates' policies?
It has become common view that there isn't a great deal of substantive difference between the frontrunners Obama and Hillary and so the contest between them has become a contest of style. So we thought because the campaign strategies and media narrative enfolding them has obscured genuine and substantive disagreement between them.

In terms of Economic policy for instance, Obama is moving more and more towards economic freedom, competition and individual choice while Hillary wavering if not moving away from it. However I believe both deserve credits in making a step forward to dismantle the US supported agriculture cartel. There are many other policies that each voters should know and understand and reflect in judging the candidates as government policies are the ones that will shape their lives for tomorrow.

Check this out, interesting =) Laughed my head-off.

You are the man Obama.."Stand for change" I WILL.
Fellow Americans, please vote him on behalf of me.

Winter-Break 2007

  • Dec. 19th, 2007 at 10:24 AM
emirates
I had a 2-week vacation way before the Uni ended with the family in Dubai and Iran, journey was good but the ending was simply devastating.

First, the Emirates flight was delayed from Tehran- Dubai for 4 hours, causing most of my family members not to sleep for nearly 24 hrs ( flight times in Iran is plain weird, they travel during the night ie. 2-4 AM). Due to that, I missed my Lufthansa flight to Manchester via Munich and the family missed theirs to Malaysia.

Emirates settled everything for us, my family had to be split into 2 : family going back on the same day whilst Ayah Mat's the following day. So I slept with them at the Millenium Airport Hotel provided by Emirates as a compensation.

With a smile plastered on my face the morning of Sept 16, went to check-in at Lufthansa counter and was told "I'm sorry mam, your ticket has expired and you have to get a FDM: Flight Deferment Manifest"

WHAT THE FISH weih. The gate was going to close in 30 minutes!

Ran like I was in a 100-metre race to Emirates office(I swear to God, you don't want to see me in that state), talked to the manager blablabla. To cut the story short, I was then told to pay GBP 450 as a penalty which I obviously contest. Had a big argument with the manager saying that it was not my fault etc etc and the fact that I missed my family didn't help either. I broke down in front of him dengan tak malunya and started another round of public shouting.

"Don't shout at me" he said.
"You shouted at me in the first place, you deserve it"

He walked out of the office and came back 45 minutes later with a new boarding pass.
I couldnt help muttering "F*** you" under my breath- He should have work out what to do with my case rather than arguing with me beforehand.

I don't usually act this way unless a situation demanded me to do so but I still need to work out and brush up my Emotional Maturity.

p/s: Oh did I mention my luggage was missing too? I had expected that way before I boarded the plane to Manchester.

Thanks Emirates, I had a 'pleasant' flight with you. Hope to see you 'soon'.

...starting to get the fever of January Exams, hah its the the time of the year again when coffee and sandwiches become the staple diet and table seems to be comfortable enough as a headrest to doze off in a merely 2 seconds...

Will make you proud Mommy and Daddy.Promise.

Loose Change 2nd Edition Recut
"Loose Change 2nd Edition Recut" on Google Video

This is a documentary done by an American youth against Bush's administration. An amazing production, compact with facts and information.
Is it possible to come up with such thing in Malaysia i.e. something against PakLah/Tun M?You got to be kidding me, you may be ISA-ed for doing that.

HUSAM

  • May. 21st, 2007 at 12:02 AM

3 papers for this week, 2 more the following week.Am trying to keep myself awake by listening to

http://malaysiakini.tv/ on Husam, PAS's VP.

husamhusam, no wonder PAS has a very low public rating. The leader himself lacks the credibility and aptitude to win the hearts of the public.
I couldnt help to groan whilst listening.
Husam, please convince me of what you are trying to say the next time you talk.
AND switch that bloody handphone off!

What is happening to us?MCOT vs KUSMA??

  • May. 5th, 2007 at 10:18 AM

I am proud to say that I am a member of the 3 big communitties in Manchester: MSSM,KUSMA and MCOT and so far have maintained a good rapport with all of em,well at least I'd like to think so.
I've registered with MCOT since last year but so far have not been in their mailing list, tried to register myself for their yahoo groups but failed to do so.In this case I blame myself for not being IT literate.Although being deprived of what has been going on in their mailing list all these while, this morning Tuckey showed me the very much controversial postings posted by one of MCOT former committee. A champion of freedom of speech and expression I am, I'd like to post Saudara * posting followed by the replies below

Re: Sedikit Teguran Kepada Semua
Salam,

Keras dan tajam jugak ye kata-kata bekas Penghulu MCOT. Tambah pula
reply yg agak sinis, dikatakan menganggap mailing list ini seperti
papan iklan masjid. Haha.
mailing list biasanya sbg platform informasi semua.

Bagi saya mudah sahaja. Sebarang program yang KUSMA lakukan, bukan
eksklusif untuk KUSMA sahaja. Maklumlah, kami bukannya berunsur
'komuniti' seperti MCOT dan program-program kami (dan mungkin MSSM
juga pada pendapat saya) adalah lebih jarang, dan lebih 'besar';
mengharapkan penglibatan warga Manchester tanpa kira persatuan apa
pun.

takkan iklankan apa-apa lagi. Jujur saya katakan bahawa saya langsung
positif utk kebaikan semua.

Mungkin saya silap sedar lah...

Kami bukan daun keladi, jangan risau. Kalau tuan rumah dah bising,
kami tau la untuk cepat-cepat balik ;). Good luck dalam exam semua.

Wasalam,
Shahril

Etot ( Faris bekas exco penerangan MCOT 03/04, duduk rumah apap)
membina perbincangan yg bermutu lagi membina.
semua warga MCOT yg membayar 6 pound yuran semasa raya yg lepas.Bukan
setakat perkara formal tu je yg kita bincangkan, jika nak post lawak,

Apebile saye tgk lambakan emel
memberitahu program2 badan lain, (maafkan saye jika ayat ni agak
kasar) saye agak kecewa, (bukan kerana saye tidak ingin mengambil tahu
program anda, bahkan saye ingin sebenarnya),kecewa kerana kurangnye
sikap professionalisme kita semua. Saya masih ingat, ketika saye
mailing list, saye pohon, anda go through la exco2 MCOT. Bukan kita
tade exco penerangan MCOT.
list MSSM.setakat yg saye tau, tak nampak pulak program hot choc kat
mailing list MSSM ?. Contoh lain lagi ,semasa MPI MCOT yg kita buat
baru2 ini, even exco MSSM yang post kan dlm mailing list MSSM.
Sepatutnye kita mengambil contoh ni dari derang. Tak salah memberitahu
kami (warga2 Pelajar Manchester) semua program2 anda (kami inginkan
satu perumpamaan yg mudah- kalau kita masuk rumah org, kene lah kita
hormat tuan rumah, moga2 tuan
> rumah tu hormat kita balik. Kalau masuk rumah Allah, kene lah
hormat Tuan Punya rumah tu, barulah Tuan Rumah tu sayang balik pada kita.
>
> Saya rase setakat itu sahaja dari saye. Bukanlah niat saye
mengeluarkan emel sebegini untuk menyakiti mahupun menjatuhkan mana 2
pihak. Dan saya bukanlah seorang yg layak sebenarnya utk mengkritik
anda semua.
seterusnya. Bukan ape, byk sgt emel2 yg tak berkaitan tu, saye risau,
anda begitu bersungguh2 menulis emel demi emel , tetapi yg bukak
untuk bace emel2 tersebut nnt kurang jumlahnye.Saya jugak paham, bende
ni berlaku mengikut season2. Kalau bersemangat society tu, banyaklah
program2 terdekat. maka jadinya byk la emel2 yg dikeluarkan
memberitahu program2 tersebut. Senang citer masalah ini berkala.
Apepun2 gunakan lah cara terbaik utk memaklumkan kepada semua.Saye sbg
ahli MCOT yg membayar 6 pound, berasa penting untuk menegakkan hak
saye sbg ahli MCOT yg sah.
>
> Akhir kata saye pohon maaf kepada semua andai kate terdapat
kekasaran yg saye luahkan mahupun nafsu kemarahan yg saye tonjolkan
dalam emel ini.Maafkan saye.
menampakkan saye sbg seorang yg PRO MCOT. mmg pun saye PRO MCOT. Saya

I firmly see myself as an independent individual. Reading this postings evoke a sense of frustration and disappointment on the social workings and construction of our community.

I truly wonder the scope of MCOT's Yahoo group.By limiting what could be posted as if only those who are truly MCOTians have the right to post stuff is equal to segregating the information that should and should not be received by fellow MCOTians. As if MCOT is a secret community, perhaps an exclusive one. In economic terms, you pay for the price of having a say ie. being a shareholder of firm. If you don't you can just look, wait and see.
I think what MCOT should think is of the purpose of having their bulletin board.

Looking at past postings, Mr. Shahril has been providing a medium for intellectual debate. If one MCOT member posts something and the others just nodd and agree it does not provide a forum for intellectual growth where individual opinions are challenged and questioned. This inevitably in the long run deter progress of our aim to have first class mentality. This remind me of Gorbachev's political policy named Glastnost. Please check previous posting.

My question is: Why cant there be posting from either MSSM or KUSMA. MSSM, KUSMA, MCOT are 3 eminent associations in Manchester which should integrate and work together towards one goal:UNITING all Malaysians,in Manchester at least. By telling KUSMA not to post their postings at MCOT's website is like a PKR member telling BN member "You are not US" Well as far as I am concerned we are not political parties are we?

My q above is directly targetted to MR * and not all MCOTians for I believe that not everyone agrees with what he said.
Let us all put ourselves as independent individuals who can think critically and rationally about this issue putting our favour of any associations behind for a while (PLEASE why is there such thing as PRO MCOT??!)
This is in line with what I've said in my previous posting of mine.
When we vote forget the party preferences (in this case be it KUSMA/MCOT/MSSM) and vote for individual with the aptitude, credibility and ability (in this case the question whether MCOT bulletin board should be censored)
Even Malaysian gov cannot censor the internet without being condemned. It's human LIBERTY ( I wish I can shout that aloud to the whole wide world). We want to live in harmony dont we?

Lets shake hands guys.It doesn't matter whether we're a member of MCOT,KUSMA, or MSSM.Whether we're Malay,Chinese or Indian.
It all boils down to one simple concept.

WE ARE ALL MALAYSIANS.

and yes WHOEVER you are I DO NOT see YOU as MCOT,KUSMA or MSSM.
I don't label people neither do I judge them based on such a weak factor.

So please smile as the above is my own opinion

Democratic Electoral Debate

  • Apr. 27th, 2007 at 9:57 AM

Had the chance this morning to catch Breakfast show on tele where they showed bits and pieces of the Democratic Electoral Debate at South Carolina last night.

http://news.yahoo.com/fc/US/Presidential_Election_2008

Havent got the chance to watch the full version of the debate tho.Copy and paste the above to watch the videos ,will definitely comment on it after I get to watch them all.
In the election next year,I believe the character and qualifications of the nominees will definitely be an important factor than party preferences, similar to what I aspire Malaysia's election to be. Can't wait for the vote counts of the by-election in Ijok this Saturday night after much chaos of slogans, songs and scenes which shows our ailing political culture.

Saturday night,am genuinely waiting for Manchester Malaysian Night 2007. Catch me on Youtube soon.Hehe.

p/s:Just realized MSNBC coverage on the debate is much more extensive:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15951637/

From what I've seen so far, Hillary Clinton is going fast with electoral funds ($ 26mill) followed by Obamo ($25 mill) but Obamo received twice the number of internet donators compared to Mrs Clinton which indirectly shows the en mass support for him to be the first black US president.
I like this Obama guy, he was the first black President of Harvard Law Review, show me a new era of black political leaders .

Hidup demokrasi!

p/s: and just realized the existence of malaysiakini.tv .very very dramalicious videos, in pau's words:i liikeee...

Russia's father of democracy

  • Apr. 24th, 2007 at 5:51 PM

Little did I know about Russian politics til I started my politics module this sem.
Today, Russia's first democratically elected leader passed away of heart failure. That reminds me that I havent finished reading politics (gahhh!) but now I've got a chance to refresh my memories on the lectures.

Well,Yeltsin was the first President elected under so-called democratic process. He brought an end to 70 yrs of Bolshevik rule, dismantled the Communist Pasrt and dissolved the SU and started a whole new epoch. In the news whilsts I was eating lunch just now,Tony Blair more or less said
"He was a remarkable man who see the needs for economic and political reform"
However there's an ambivalent of attitudes towards him including yours truly and why is that?

He may be deserved to be honoured as a liberator and a patriot but he was also the man who destroyed Russia by letting democracy turned to anarcy and free market to rapacious exploitation. He came into power towards the death of communism and were trying to prove that Gorbachev's(last leader of Soviet Union)idea of perestroika and glastnost can make a better government.

Just incase you need to be enlightened on these Gorbachev's jargon -
Perestroika: a combination of policies to intended to produce major policies politically and economically
Glastnost: encouraging greater opennes for discussion in the belief that airing of opinons was vital for new ideas to come forward.

His final years were characterized as chaos- breakdown of public health and education, rampant inflation, corrruption and almost total collapse of the rule of law which is not surprising at all as Yeltsin lack the charismatic personality that is vital to be the nation's first man. His outlandish behaviour grabbed the n/papers headlines back then.
Ikmal, sure u do remember dis too based on the lecture; Yeltsin was 6 hours late to meet up err..cant remember which country's leader bcos he was on the binge of drinking. Now we know who Paris Hilton's role model is.LOL. He was also forced to explain by Supreme Soviet how he ended up at a police station dripping wet in his underwear. In short, he frequently shunned protocol and diplomacy to the light of ordinary people.

In the light to save the economy,he appointed Gaidar a prominent Western economist but what happened was truly a disaster as major industries were privatised. This give rise to oligarchs who owned almost 50& of Russia's wealth. It was as if Yeltsin had inoculated Russia against democracy.

But watever his weaknesses were,he has my full respect for bringing Russia away from its past cos without Yeltsin the search to become part of the democratic system could not have begun.

Ive been hibernating since ages, notice my last entry was last year. Ive deleted the entries before that (11 entries all together) for I have been thinking the direction of my blog. Now no longer will it be on my daily lives for there is no necessity to do so.My political and social perceptions and views have changed a lot,I'd say I've grown out of my shell and wait for the return of my blog you shall.
Thanks to Izi who had triggered me that I do have a blog space to blog, Ive almost forgotten all about it.

Bush

  • Nov. 13th, 2006 at 3:12 AM

Reading the n/paper on Saturday reminds me of my politics class a week before where our small discussion group turned into a political debate field which started merely with a question of "who is the worst america's presidents?"

Without any hesitation,i answered Bush and the whole range of saga and drama started.Had a bit of laugh when Brian mimicked Bush's speech at Ground Zero to stress his points.

Personally, based on what Ive read and pondered upon.the iraq situation had nothing to do with international terrorism. They wanted to go in and that was just an excuse to do so.

Bush's administration had destabilised and polarised the world. In relation to the fact that they went in with a few troops? BIG MISTAKE!Immediately after 9/11 he went running like a RAT!he went into hiding and this demonstrated the worst of morality.his admin was based on completely false historical parallels. They Have done this through ignorance, insensitivity and lack of forethought.

Bush is the ultimate epitome of hyprocracy and simply a big fat ugly coward. He has shown himself to be a man who is more anxious to gain profit of his power than the long term benefits of his people.

recently, while the world's attention was diverted by the elections in Washington,a tragedy was taking place in Middle East.ALl these type of news were hard to swallow at first but now it seems not notmal for me not to find such news.I believe a prayer to Allah the Almighty wud help my fellow sisters and brothers.
It reminds me Ustaz Fazli back in 2003,where he cried and weeped and weeped till the whole assembly was weeping when he led the doa on a Monday morning for those involved in this terrible mess.

I'd love to say (INSERT SOME NASTY WORDS HERE) to all those responsible for Iraqis distraught and poverty-stricken state. The sense of loss they are suffering is incomprehensible.

My family took 2 years to swallow the fact that arwah Abang (God bless him) passed away without saying goodbye what more for these people whose friends and relatives lives were taken away by someone who played God.

I happen to express myself in my own way.

And about Saddam Hussein's death sentence,no matter how much i hate BLIAR, i am with him.Saddam with the heinousness of crimes under his rule,i wish i can puke on his dead body.

Again mind me.I'm a lil bit outraged tonight

It all started cos i cant do the math exercises on game theory.argh.
